How words to number conversion works

The tool reads each word from left to right. Small words (one to nineteen) and tens (twenty to ninety) are added together. “Hundred” multiplies what came before it. A scale word such as thousand, lakh, million or crore closes the group and multiplies it into the running total.

So “twelve crore thirty-four lakh” is worked out as 12 × 10,000,000 + 34 × 100,000 = 123,400,000. Words like “and”, “only”, and the currency name are ignored, and anything after a minor unit such as paise or cents is read as the decimal part.

Frequently asked questions

Does it understand lakh and crore?

Yes. Lakh (lac), crore, arab, kharab, neel, padma and shankh are recognised along with thousand, million, billion and trillion.

Can I include rupees and paise or dollars and cents?

Yes. Currency words are detected, so “Twelve Thousand Five Hundred Dollars and Fifty Cents” returns 12500.50. A fraction such as “and 50/100” is read too.

Why do I get an unrecognised word message?

The tool only accepts English number words. Check the spelling (for example “forty”, not “fourty” – though that spelling is tolerated) and remove any extra words that are not part of the amount.
